Getting Around Koh Rong: Scooters, Roads, Tuk-Tuks & Water Taxis (2026)

Last fact-checked: October 2026

Until 2020, Koh Rong had almost no roads and visitors could only move between beaches by longtail boat or sweaty jungle hikes. Today, around 70 kilometers of wide concrete roads link Koh Touch, Long Set (4K Beach), Pagoda Beach, Coconut Beach, Sok San (Long Beach), and Prek Svay fishing village, giving you four convenient ways to explore the island.

1. Renting a Scooter ($10–$15/Day) — Best for Independence

Guesthouses and rental shops in Koh Touch, Long Set, and Sok San rent automatic 110cc–125cc Honda Click and AirBlade scooters:

  • Rental Rates & Fuel: $10–$15 per 24 hours. Gasoline is sold in 1-liter glass bottles at roadside stalls for $1.25–$1.50 per liter (2 liters is enough to circle the whole island).
  • Road Conditions & Steep Hills: 90% of the main network is smooth 8-meter-wide concrete. However, the mountain pass between Koh Touch and Sok San has steep gradients and sharp curves—always test both brakes before renting and wear a helmet.
  • Sand & Dirt Sections: Avoid riding scooters directly onto soft beach sand, and park before the final rough dirt track into Lonely Beach.

2. Island Tuk-Tuks & Pickup Taxis

If you are traveling with luggage or prefer not to ride a scooter, open-air tuk-tuks and 4WD pickup taxis wait behind Koh Touch Pier, Long Set Pier, and Sok San Village. Agree on the fare before setting off (typical rates are $5–$8 for short hops and $15–$25 across the island to Sok San).

3. Longtail Water Taxis

Traditional wooden longtail boats remain the most scenic way to hop along the coast and reach remote coves like Lonely Beach or Nature Beach. You can hail a boat at Koh Touch Pier or ask any beachfront bar to radio a boatman.

Getting Around Koh Rong FAQ

Is Grab or PassApp available on Koh Rong?

No ride-hailing apps work on Koh Rong itself (PassApp and Grab work on the mainland in Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh). On the island, you book tuk-tuks or taxis directly through your hotel or at the pier.

Do I need an international driving permit to rent a scooter on Koh Rong?

Rental shops on the island rarely ask for a license (they usually hold a cash deposit or passport copy), but remember that your travel medical insurance only covers motorbike accidents if you hold a valid motorcycle license and wear a helmet.
