Almost everyone reaches Koh Rong by boat. Here is how the ferries work, how long the crossing takes, what it costs and which pier to choose.
From Sihanoukville
Speed ferries leave from the Sihanoukville Tourist Port, part of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port next to Victory Beach. There are several departures a day, roughly between 7:45 am and 4-5 pm, with the most boats in the high season. One-way tickets cost about $14-20, return tickets about $25-35. Most boats go to Koh Touch, some also stop at other piers:

From Kampot and Koh Sdach
The Kampot International Tourism Port, officially opened in April 2025, has a daily boat to Koh Touch that takes about 2-2.5 hours and costs roughly $15-25. It is the easiest way to reach Koh Rong from Kampot or Kep without going through Sihanoukville. There is also a boat from Koh Sdach in Koh Kong province to Koh Touch, taking about 1.5 hours.
The Slow Supply Boat
A traditional local supply boat runs from Pier 52 in Sihanoukville to the pier in Prek Svay village in the north-east of Koh Rong. The trip takes about 2.5-3 hours and costs about $7.50 each way for foreigners. It is slow and basic, but cheap and a good way to see local life.
Between Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem
The two islands are only about 6 km apart. Fast ferries (for example GTVC at around 9:00, 12:00 and 15:00) take 15-45 minutes and cost from about $9, local boat taxis start at about $5, and a private longtail boat costs from about $20. Koh Rong Sanloem guide
Tips
- Book ahead for Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year and Khmer New Year (mid-April), when boats fill up.
- Arrive at the pier about 30 minutes before departure.
- Check which pier is closest to your hotel before you book; a direct boat is easier than crossing the island with luggage.
- In the rainy season (especially July and August) boats are occasionally cancelled in rough seas, so keep a buffer day before your onward flight.
