How to Get to Koh Rong (2026 Update)
Step 1: Getting to Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville remains the primary hub for island departures. Traveling from Phnom Penh is now faster than ever thanks to the fully operational expressway.
- From Phnom Penh: 2 hours via the Expressway (Private taxi approx. $60, Bus $12-15).
- By Air: Fly to Sihanouk International Airport (KOS). New international routes from Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh, and Singapore are active in 2026.
Step 2: The Ferry Crossing
High-speed ferries are the primary way to reach the island. As of 2026, there are two main departure points from the mainland:
From Sihanoukville (Traditional Route)
Ferries depart hourly from the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port. The journey takes 45-60 minutes. Round-trip tickets are approximately $25 - $30 USD.
- GTVC Speedboat: Modern catamarans, very stable.
- Speed Ferry Cambodia: One of the most frequent services.
- Buva Sea: Fast speedboats to all major piers.
From Kampot (New Route for 2026)
Launched in early 2026, a new high-speed boat service now connects the Kampot International Tourist Port directly to Koh Rong. This is a game-changer for tourists traveling from southern Cambodia, allowing them to bypass Sihanoukville entirely.
The Future: Koh Rong International Airport
Construction of the Koh Rong International Eco-Tourism Airport ($300 million project by Royal Group) is currently in full swing. Following the start of earthworks in 2024, the Phase 1 terminal and 2,650-meter runway are expected to be completed and operational around 2028–2029.
Important Tip:
Always confirm which beach your hotel is located on. Ferries stop at Koh Touch, Long Set, and Sok San. There is now a road connecting these beaches, but a direct boat transfer is still easier for luggage.
