Essential Travel Intelligence (March 2026 Update)
Quick Answers for 2026
Internet: High-speed 4G/LTE & fiber Wi-Fi.
Payments: KHQR (Bakong) everywhere.
Roads: 70km concrete ring road complete.
Energy: 24/7 national grid.
Safety: Modern clinic in Koh Touch.
From Phnom Penh: 2 hours via expressway.
In early 2026, Koh Rong is no longer the "off-grid" island of the past. Massive infrastructure investments by the Royal Group and the Cambodian government have brought 24/7 power, concrete roads, and high-speed internet to almost every corner of the island.
Payments & Money
The biggest shift in 2026 is the death of the "cash-only" era. While backup cash is still recommended, Cambodia's digital payment system is now world-leading.
- Bakong Tourists App: Before you arrive, download the "Bakong Tourists" app. You can link your international Visa/Mastercard and pay at almost any shop or restaurant using KHQR codes. It is faster and safer than carrying cash.
- ATMs: Reliable ATMs are now located in Koh Touch and near the Long Set pier. They dispense both USD and KHR.
- Currency: USD remains the primary currency for tourists, but KHR (Riel) is used for small change. Ensure your USD bills are in good condition.
Power & Connectivity
Thanks to the 60km submarine power cable, the island's energy crisis is a thing of the past.
- Electricity: All main beaches (Koh Touch, Long Set, Sok San, Coconut Beach) are connected to the national grid. Power cuts are now as rare as on the mainland.
- Internet & Wi-Fi: Reliable 4G/LTE mobile coverage and fiber-optic Wi-Fi are active across the main hubs and resorts, making Koh Rong a top destination for digital nomads in 2026.
Health & Safety
- Medical Services: A modern private clinic is now operational in the Koh Touch area, capable of first aid, injury treatment, and patient stabilization before mainland transport. For major emergencies, Sihanoukville's hospitals are only 40 minutes away by speed-ferry.
- Sandflies: These remain the only natural "nuisance." Use local coconut oil or specialized repellents sold at island pharmacies. DEET is often less effective than oil-based barriers.
- Drinking Water: Never drink tap water. Use the filtered water stations provided by many eco-resorts to reduce plastic waste.
Island Transport
The 70km concrete Island Ring Road is now fully operational.
- Scooters: Standard and electric scooters are available for $10-$15/day. The paved roads make cross-island trips safe and easy.
- Water Taxis: Still available for a traditional experience or to reach isolated bays like Lonely Beach that remain road-free.
